The long-legged, very shaggy Brown Hyena is the southern version of the Striped Hyena. Clans of 4 to 14 animals live in large territories. Less predatory than the Spotted Hyena, the Brown Hyena eats large ungulates only when it can find carrion or appropriate carcasses from other predators, otherwise it subsists on occasional small vertebrates, fruit, vegetables, and insects. When a Hyena finds more food than it can eat, it caches the rest and returns to it later.
