Wawona, named for an Indian word that may have meant Big Tree, was originally a trailside camp operated by Galen Clark, the first guardian of the Yosemite Grant of 1864. When the Wawona Road to Yosemite Valley was being built in 1874, the Washburn brothers purchase Clark's Station and built most of the buildings of the Wawona Hotel.
